JOHN HAMILTON HISTORY
John Hamilton, Thomas Baillies father-in-law, was born in 1801 in Paisley, Scotland. He was named after his father who was also born and raised in Paisley. He had one brother, Mathew, and two sisters, one named Elizabeth but the name of the other sister is not known. John worked during his younger days in the Paisley shawl factory and in 1824 or 1825 he was married to Anna Polson. Their only child Elizabeth was born in June 1826, and in February 1846 she was married to Thomas Baillies who was born in Ireland in 1814, but who resided in Glasgow until he went to Paisley to work as a cabinet maker. Their daughter Ann was born July 18, 1848. In August, 1849, John and his second wife who was Margaret Reside, his first wife having died in 1833, and Thomas Baillies and wife and daughter Ann, and Matt and Jim Weatherspoon who were sons of John Hamiltons sister who was a widow, sailed from Liverpool for New York, and settled in Columbia County, Wisconsin, in October 1849.

Thomas Baillies had one brother named Alexander who had two sons. These two sons left Scotland sometime in the 1860s and went to Canada. Elizabeth Hamilton came to the United States about 1851 after her father and mother died and she married a Mr. Clough, a widower and lived in New Lisbon, Wisconsin.

John Polson was a cousin of Mrs. Thomas Baillies and was a very wealthy man having a large manufacturing establishment that made starch. He and his wife came to visit the Hamiltons and Baillies in 1866 but stayed only for a short time as they were touring the country.
